Three angle iron lintels
What we found: A trio of angle iron lintels in Waterlooville had corroded to the point that the rust was pushing the brick courses above visibly out of place.
What's causing it: Corroding steel expands as it rusts, and with nowhere for that expansion to go, it forces the masonry sitting above it upward — by the time the brickwork is visibly displaced, the corrosion has usually been progressing for a while.
What we did: We replaced all three lintels and fitted new trickle vent trays above each opening to help keep moisture from building up again. The whole job was wrapped up in a day.
Why lintels fail across Hampshire
Lintel failure across Hampshire comes down to a few real causes: moisture penetration causing rust in steel lintels or spalling in concrete ones, boot lintel rotation where the outer toe lacks proper bearing support, and in older properties, rotten timber lintels reaching the end of their natural life.
Correct diagnosis matters before deciding between repair and full replacement — not every failing lintel needs the same fix, and getting it wrong means paying twice.
Lintel replacement cost in Hampshire
Across Hampshire, lintel work typically starts at £800, with the type of lintel, how many need attention, and site access all influencing the final price. Here's what actually moves the price:
- Lintel type — steel angle iron lintels are generally more straightforward to replace than boot lintels, which need both skins of brickwork supported
- Number of lintels — jobs covering multiple openings cost more per visit but less per lintel
- Extent of surrounding damage — cracked or displaced brickwork above the lintel adds making-good time
- Repair vs replacement — early-stage corrosion or rotation can sometimes be addressed without full replacement
