Spalling barn columns near Denmead
What we found: Spalling across 4 columns on a barn near Denmead, with the rusting rebar inside clearly visible where it had pushed the concrete apart. Repair areas varied in width but were generally 500mm to 1 metre tall.
What's causing it: Agricultural buildings of this age were often built with less concrete cover protecting the steel than would be standard today, giving moisture an easier route to the reinforcement — once that steel starts corroding, the expanding rust does the rest of the damage from the inside.
What we did: We treated the exposed steel with Fosroc Nitoprime Zincrich primer to stop the corrosion in its tracks, then rebuilt the columns with Fosroc Renderoc structural repair mortar. The whole job took 2 days.
Why concrete deteriorates across Hampshire
Across Hampshire, concrete deterioration is almost always down to reinforcement corrosion — moisture and, near the coast, salt reaching the embedded steel inside the concrete. As the steel corrodes, it expands and cracks the surrounding concrete from the inside out, a pattern often called concrete cancer.
Every job is carried out to BS EN 1504, the UK standard governing concrete repair work, which means the exposed steel is properly cleaned and treated before anything gets rebuilt — not just patched over the visible damage.
Concrete repair cost in Hampshire
Across Hampshire, what you pay depends on the extent and depth of the damage, the reinforcement's condition, and how accessible the site is. Here's what actually affects the number:
- Size and depth of the damaged area — small surface spalling is quicker to repair than larger structural damage
- Condition of the reinforcement steel — lightly corroded rebar can be cleaned and treated; heavier corrosion means replacing sections
- Building type — agricultural buildings with limited original cover sometimes need more extensive treatment
- Access — ground-level repairs are straightforward; height may need scaffolding

Noticed a problem like this?
We cover the whole of Hampshire, not just Portsmouth and Southampton, bringing the same proper diagnosis and proven repair methods to every job regardless of the town. Reinforcement corrosion is the underlying cause in most cases, and treating it properly from the steel outward is what makes a repair last.
